1 stick butter
1 cup sugar
2 tbsp. maple syrup
6 slices of 1 inch thick bread
5 large eggs
1-1/2 cups half-n-half
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. orange extract
1/4 tsp. salt
In a saucepan, melt the butter with the sugar and maple syrup over medium heat, stirring until smooth, then pour into a 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish.
Arrange your bread slices in a single layer in the glass baking dish.
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-n-half, vanilla and orange extracts, and salt until mixed well, and pour evenly over the bread.
Chill the bread mixture in the baking dish, covered with plastic wrap, in the refrigerator for at least eight hours or up to one day.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Let the chilled bread mixture return to room temperature.
Bake the bread mixture uncovered, in the middle of the oven until puffed and the edges are golden brown, about 45 minutes.
Serve immediately with syrup (if desired, it really doesn’t need it!)
* Makes 3 servings of 2 slices each, I used two 9×13 pans and doubled recipe so to serve 6.
